Paul Schiffer – Club Director
Paul is one of the founders of AVC. He is the Club Director for day to day business. He is currently the assistant coach of the 17’s and 18’s. He helped lead the 2018 17’s to two qualifier championships and runner up in a third one. He was the Assistant Coach on the 2015 AAU National Championship 17 National team. He has coached several teams to OVR Championships as well as leading his teams to the Nationals 5 times. He has served as the Assistant Coach for teams have qualified open 6 times. He has coached 64 athletes that have gone on to play in college including 32 D1 athletes. He has coached at the CYO, Regional, National and Open level. He also serves as the Business Development, Recruiting Director, Transportation Coordinator, and Housing Director for the club.
Brian is the Academy's co-founder and co-owner. He is in charge of AVC’s administration and finances. Before his 6 year varsity coaching career began at Aurora High School, Brian participated on Case Western Reserve University Men’s Club Volleyball Team, who were two-time NCAC Champions in 1993 and 1994. Brian is well known in the volleyball community and has 20 years of playing experience as a USA Volleyball player. Brian is IMPACT, ASEP, CAP I and CAP II certified.
Brian is one of the founders of AVC along with Brian Highfield. He is the Club Director for the 14 and under Regional and American teams. After coaching older players the first 3 years of AVC, he moved to coaching younger national teams in the 12 - 14’s age groups and has qualified 4 of his 5 teams to nationals. His teams best finishes are 13th in the country in 2013 and 11th in the National division in 2014. He also coached beach in 2014 and his players finished 9th in the country for the 14’s Open division. He really has a passion to coach and train the players in these age groups. Besides Brian’s coaching experience, he also brings valuable playing experience to the table, having participated in Men’s USAVB and in local volleyball leagues. Brian is IMPACT, ASEP, CAP I and CAP II certified.
This will be Jeff's 4th season with AVC. He has 8 seasons of coaching experience with three area clubs, as well as 3 years experience with St Joseph's Academy as varsity assistant. He has 3 USAV national qualifications. 2013 17-2 open class as the only club in the OVR to qualify 2 Open teams in the same age class, 2014 15-1 national class 5th place, 2015 16-1 open class 5th place. In addition to coaching Jeff will be heading up a new position of Director of Player Development for the National Program. Jeff is also Impact Certified.
This will be Meredith's 5th season with AVC. A native from Los Angeles, Meredith has 11 years of coaching experience. In Meredith's first year at AVC her 17-2 team qualified Open as the only club
in the OVR to qualify 2 Open teams in the same age group. Out of her four seasons at AVC, coaching teams ranging from 15s to 17s, she has qualified open three times, including a 5th place finish in
the 2015 season.
This year she will be the head coach of our 17-1 National team. In addition to coaching, Meredith will continue to assist Jeff Reaser in Player Development and Positional Training as well as the Club Recruiting Coordinator. Meredith is married to Kent State Head Coach, Don Gromala.
Elizabeth began coaching for AVC in 2013. She has played volleyball since she was 8-years-old and is excited to continue to share her knowledge of the game. Elizabeth graduated from Strongsville High School in 2008, Ashland University in 2012 with a degree in Child Development and Family Studies and with her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of Akron in 2018. She works as a Mental Health Therapist for an agency in Cleveland. Elizabeth played on JO national teams and at the club level in college. She likes to play sand and indoor leagues in her spare time. Elizabeth is IMPACT certified.
This will be Jason's first year coaching at AVC and coaching Club Volleyball. He has 5 years of coaching experience with Kenston Rec Volleyball. Jason also has had 18 years experience of coaching both high school and college football. He has two daughters that play for AVC. Maddie is a Freshman at Baldwin Wallace University where she plays volleyball and Abby is on Meredith's 17 National team.
Christiana came to in 2014. She was named AVC’s 2018 Coach of the Year after a 48-4 season held by the 13 Elite Team. Finishing first in the OVR in their division, the 2018 13 Elite Team had five tournament wins (Eastside, President’s Day Cup, Goodyear, Glass City, and OVR Regionals) and 4-second place finishes in gold (Rock n Rumble, Bluegrass, and the Windy City National Qualifier). Christiana is really looking forward to the upcoming season at AVC. As a player, Christiana was a three-year member of the varsity volleyball team at Lakeside High School in Ashtabula. As a sophomore, she earned second team All-County and honorable mention All-Conference. The team went 22-4, winning the conference, winning the sectional championship and making the school’s first district appearance. As a junior, she earned first team All-County and first team All-Conference, and the team won a back-to-back conference title. Christiana missed her senior season due to a knee injury, but received the Dr. William Seeds Scholarship for her athletic performance. Christiana played club for 6 years, playing at the National level for 4 years. JO clubs included Club Ashtabula (2 years), Renaissance (1 year), and Maverick (3 years). Throughout high school, Christiana attended the Sports Performance Setters Academy and was chosen for the 2008 USA Volleyball camp in San Francisco, California. Christiana went on to play collegiate volleyball at the Division I level as a setter/right side at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Liddia began coaching for AVC in 2018. She was very successful in her first year with AVC with both her teams qualifying for the top 32 Gold bracket at Regionals along with multiple tournament wins. She played JO for 7 years, one of those being at AVC. Liddia is graduating this year from The University of Akron with her degree in Early Childhood Education/Intervention Specialist. Liddia’s past knowledge of volleyball and current knowledge of teaching translates very well into the success of her teams. She is excited for another successful season.
Karol has over 20 years experience coaching volleyball at She has taken many CYO girls' and boys' teams on to win City Championships and has a very high level of success in the USAV circuit, as well. She was inducted into the Magnificat High School Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Baldwin Wallace University Athletic Hall of Fame and was elected Senior Female Athlete of the Year in both high school and college. Her children, Alyssa, Alex and Kyra are all Collegiate Volleyball Players. Her son Eli plays USAV National Volleyball.
Stacey was a 4 year starter for the Baldwin-Wallace Men's Club Team. He has over 15 years of coaching experience with boys and girls CYO and club teams. He has coached at both Northcoast Volleyball Club, Southwest Volleyball Club and for the last 3 years has been with AVC. He is IMPACT certified.
Adam Evans has coached nine seasons of Varsity Volleyball between both Norton High School and Massillon Washington High School. Adam has also been active in USA Volleyball as a club coach, working with 8 clubs in various roles, including 7 years as a club Director. He has been the head coach or assistant coach of six teams that have qualified for the USAV Girls' Junior Championships, including five for AVC. One team qualified after the 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015 seasons and two teams qualified after the 2014 season. Adam played for 17 years in Men's USAV mostly at the A and Open levels as a middle blocker. Adam is a CAP II certified volleyball coach, a USAV Regional Official and is serving a third term on the Ohio Valley Region Board of Directors.
Jodi Evans has been coaching USAV Volleyball teams for twenty years, beginning in 1994. Upon graduating from Eastwood High School in 1986, Jodi accepted a volleyball scolarship to play for the University of Akron. She's still among the top ten all time in many kill and block categories for Akron U. In January of 2003, Jodi was honored with her induction to the University of Akron Athletic Hall of Fame for her accomplishements on the court. Jodi has been the Varsity Volleyball coach at three high schools; Our Lady of the Elms, Kenston and Shelby and has previously coached USA Volleyball with Club NET, Richland Volleyball Club and Renaissance Cleveland.
Liz started coaching at AVC in 2018, after 5 years of coaching club volleyball outside the Ohio area. She started playing volleyball at age 10, played at Solon High School and a variety of area clubs, such as Renaissance, CVC and Eastside.
Liz spent her first three years coaching for Memphis Metro Volleyball Club in Tennessee and is very excited to be back in the Cleveland area with AVC.
Liz currently teaches and coaches volleyball at Saint Martin de Porres High School.
Char started with AVC in 2017 after many years involved with volleyball, both as a coach and as a player. She coached the 8th grade team for two seasons at the Daniel Island School in Charleston, SC where she specialized in teaching offense execution and decision making, defensive positioning as well as blocking technique. As a two year starter at Tri-C and current player for the past 30+ years (hard court and beach) in USA Volleyball, Char brings her experience to her teaching and game management. Professionally, Char leads technology delivery and operation teams and strives to share her experiences beyond volleyball to help her players grow both athletically and personally.
Sara started coaching in 2017 for AVC as an assistant coach. Along with coaching at AVC she has coached at St. Peter Chanel(Freshman Volleyball Coach), Regina(Freshman Volleyball Coach), and Ravenna(JV Co-Coach and now Varsity Head Coach). When not coaching, Sara can be found teaching Algebra 1 and 2 at Ravenna High School. She still enjoys playing the sport herself every chance she gets and is normally found playing on at least 1 4s sand volleyball team in the summer months.
This is Kailey's second year coaching at AVC. Last year, Kailey's team ranked high in the OVR's. She enjoyed coaching such a fun and successful group of girls her first year. She has played volleyball for over 12 years, 3 of which at AVC. She was a defensive specialist at Walsh Jesuit High School, and continued to play on the John Carroll Women's club volleyball team. She is currently a junior at JCU studying Child and Family Studies, Psychology with a track of Speech Pathology. She looks forward to another great year of coaching. She will bring enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, and endurance to the girls on the court. She is IMPACT, SafeSport, and Concussion certified.
Melyssa joined AVC in 2018 with years of competitive playing experience at Jump Serve Volleyball Club and St. Joseph Academy. She successfully coached a top 20 team her first year and was
awarded Rookie Coach the Year for her first season as a coach. Along with volleyball, Melyssa also ran varsity level track and cross country so she fully understands the importance of athlete
health, endurance and good sportsmanship.
She is an alumni of the University of Cincinnati where she studied Communications and today works full time for ASM International as the Chapter Retention Specilaist.
She is IMPACT, SafeSport and Concussion certified.
Michael has been with AVC since 2012. He has coached both boys and girls teams with AVC and at Jump Serve Volleyball Club. His teams consistently place in the top 20 in the OVR. Michael was the JV coachBrecksville Broadview Hts. High School for 5 years and was then the Head coach Hathaway Brown.He has a passion for the sport and is driven to teach success in team unity as well as individual improvement. He is IMPACT certified.
Denise started coaching at AVC in 2018. She brings over 10 years of volleyball and experience to the club and looks forward to sharing that with her team. Denise currently is the head coach at Hathaway Brown in Shaker Heights. Prior to that role Denise spent 5 years as assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Cleveland Heights High. She coached 15/16 Elite teams outside of AVC. In high school, she started as a defensive specialist but ended high school career as the starting middle hitter at Shaker Heights where she earned 3 year varsity letter. Denise has one daughter that plays for a national team at AVC. Denise is IMPACT, SafeSport and Concussion certified. Denise still competes, playing in indoor and outdoor volleyball leagues.
Christian’s began coaching at AVC in 2016. He has coached club volleyball for eight years, six years at the national level, and at the high school level for four years. Christian played high school volleyball for Centerville High School and played for the Ohio University’ men’s club team while serving as a practice player for the OU women’s team. He is currently a special education teacher at Cleveland Heights High School.
Nicolette began with AVC in 2018 and has spent 8 seasons coaching at Independence High School as the JV Coach and 1 year at Twinsburgh. Nicolette was a 4 year letter winner in at Cuyahoga Heights High School as the teams Libero where she earned many awards in the area and conference.
Michael began coaching for AVC in 2018 after spending 4 years coaching at Maverick and Eastside. Michael has also coached at Ledgemont HS as the varsity Head Coach, Kenston High School as the JV coach, Laurel as the JV coach and most recently Independence High School as an assistant where they lost in the State Semifinals. Michael is a certified HS referee as well. Michael has been playing competitve Volleyball for the past 12 years and is very active in private lessons where he enjoys sharing his knowledge of the sport. Last year Michael took his JO team to Nationals for the first time where they finished with a 4th place finish in their division.
This is John's second year coaching for AVC. John (Motts) brings with him over 20 years volleyball coaching experience including at the high school junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant coach levels as well as JO. He has previously served as a JO Volleyball club director and head coach for LEVA as well as being a head coach for 12 years at CVC.
Carly started with AVC in 2016, while also coaching at Parma Senior High for three years. Carly started coaching right out of high school and has been coaching at AVC since she was 18. Carly played volleyball for Parma Senior and lettered three years, while also playing American at AVC.
Arielle began coaching at AVC in 2017 with 5 years of coaching experience. She was a JO head coach for Ohio Valley Volleyball Club for 3 years coaching 16 American. Coached at Maple Heights High School her Alma Mater as the freshman head coach. Last year at AVC she coached the 17 National 2 team. Arielle was a 3 year varsity starter in High School and played at AVC for 5 years and Extreme Volleyball club for 1. Arielle graduated from Bethany College a Division III school in Bethany, West Virginia where she was recruited as an outside but became a middle hitter for the Bison. Arielle still competes, playing in indoor and outdoor beach volleyball leagues.
Emily began her coaching career at AVC in 2018. She helped coach at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School during the 2018 season. Emily played 6 years of club at the national level, two being at AVC, and was recruited to play at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. After shoulder surgery her sophomore year, she played club volleyball at SRU. Emily graduated in May of 2018 with a dual major in Early Childhood Education and Special Education and a minor in Middle School Mathematics. She is currently a teacher in the Revere Local School District. Emily loves to play sand volleyball during the summer.
Erick was the Head volleyball coach at Strongsville High School for 16 years and has won over 300 varsity matches. He was named conference coach of the year 4 times and District coach of the year twice. In 2013 Erick led the Mustangs to their first ever District Championship and Regional finals. Erick has coached 16 athletes who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, 9 of those athletes played at the DI level. Erick has coached at a few volleyball clubs over the years including: Southwest, Players Choice and Ignite. Many of his teams have finished the season as Regional Champions. Erick has been with AVC for the last three years coaching the top 11’s teams and finding great success. In addition to coaching indoor at AVC, Erick has also coached the AVC 12U teams on the beach. In 2015 Erick helped qualify 4 teams to the USA Beach National Championships. Erick played volleyball for the Kent State Men’s MIVA Volleyball team. After college he played USA volleyball at the AA/Open levels and has won 2 regional championships.
Kelly began coaching at AVC in 2017. She brings 15 years of volleyball and leadership experience to the club and looks forward to sharing that knowledge with her team. In high school, she played as a defensive specialist for Willoughby South and later graduated from Kent State University. Kelly currently works as the event manager for private aviation company, Flexjet. She is IMPACT, SafeSport and Concussion certified.
Rachel joined AVC in 2018 but has been coaching club volleyball for 6 years.She also was the JV coach at Holy Name High School, the 8th grade coach at St. Albert the Great and a private lesson instructor. Rachel started playing volleyball in 4th grade. She played club at the national level for Renaissance and Quicksilver while attending Holy Name High School. She then went on to have a successful 4-year volleyball career at Baldwin Wallace, where she earned multiple All-Conference honors. She currently works in marketing and is pursuing her MBA while still competing when she gets the chance.
Rachel is excited to be a part of AVC and to share her love of volleyball with the girls.
Grayson started with AVC in 2017. She brings over 15 years of playing experience and 3 years of coaching experience. Grayson played as a middle blocker/right side hitter for Saint Joseph Academy in Cleveland, and continued her playing career at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, where she was given numerous conference awards and nominations. Grayson began her coaching career with Maine Juniors before moving home to Cleveland and working with AVC. Grayson is also currently the freshman coach at Lakewood High School. In addition to coaching, Grayson continues to play every chance she gets. She is grateful to have the opportunity to share her passion for volleyball with young athletes. She is IMPACT and SafeSport certified.
Sonja Williams was the head coach at Ursuline College. The former Shaw University standout started her coaching career as a junior varsity coach at Beaumont School in 2004 and she served in that capacity for three seasons. Williams then became the head coach at Saint Peter Chanel High School from 2008-09 before leaving to coach freshmen at North Royalton High School.Before coming to Pepper Pike, Williams was the head coach at Warrensville Heights High School for two seasons. She also coached junior Olympic volleyball for Renaissance Cleveland, Cleveland Volleyball Company and Academy Volleyball (Cleveland). At the club level, Williams tutored players that ranged from 11 to 18 years old. A former star athlete in her own right, Williams was named the Shaw University ‘Freshman of the Year’ and ‘Player of the Year’ during her days as a Bear. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association also named her to its all-conference team. She now lives in Broadview Heights with her husband Brian. The couple has three children, Shannon, Brian Jr. and Bryndan.
Rich has been with AVC since it's inception. He has coached girls and boys teams ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old for the last 24 years. He has also coached at other JO and CYO programs, including Renaissance Cleveland and St. Rita. Rich has certifications in SafeSport, Concussion, IMPACT, ASEP, CAP I and CAP II.
Michelle is in her 2nd year coaching at AVC. Michelle was a 3 year varsity starter at Wayne High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Michelle was a 1st team all conference middle hitter her junior and senior year. She earned 9 varsity letters in high school in tennis, volleyball and basketball. Michelle played for the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club for 3 years. Michelle received a scholarship to Kent State University where she was an outside hitter for 4 years for the Golden Flashes. Michelle graduated with an undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology and a Master's in Early Intervention. She is eager to share her love and knowledge of volleyball with young players.
Marci came to AVC in 2017 with over 20 years coaching and leadership experience. Her 15 Regional team had a successful season, finishing 12th. She has been the Volleyball Coordinator at St Barnabas Parish for 14 years where she organizes all aspects of the girls teams in 3rd-8th grade, boys teams in 5th-8th grade, and co-ed high school teams. She has coached CYO girls and boys since 1996. She also works for CYO as a Site Coordinator. Her commitment to CYO comes from a passion of teaching volleyball fundamentals to youth players and making the game of volleyball available to young athletes of all skill levels. Marci is the head Freshmen coach and Varsity assistant coach at Trinity High School. She is the head coach of the Cleveland State Men's Volleyball Team. Marci and her husband John have 7 children and live in Sagamore Hills. She is IMPACT, Safesport, First Aid, CPR, and Concussion certified.
Lauren started with AVC in 2017 but her experience with AVC began in 2012 when she played on the 18-1 National team. She has spent many years as a Junior Olympic player and has qualified Open with her teams 5 times.
Lauren attended Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School where she was a 4-year starter for head coach Tom Ray. She is now back at NDCL as a varsity assistant coach.
Lauren graduated cum laude from Gannon University in 2017 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During her time at Gannon she was a 4-year starter on the University’s NCAA Division ll women’s volleyball team, where she earned all-conference honors as a middle hitter. She is now a full time registered nurse at the Cleveland Clinic.
Lauren is very passionate about volleyball. She loves to share her knowledge and experience with today’s up and coming players.
Maddie started her coaching career with AVC in 2018 after seven of years of playing for the club. She is a graduate of Kenston high school where she played volleyball all four years. Currently she is pursuing a Biology degree at Baldwin Wallace College while playing volleyball. She is very excited to share her volleyball experience with young girls.
Erica began coaching for AVC in 2018. She began playing volleyball when she was 9 years old and throughout the years has played on multiple national level teams. She has gone to nationals multiple times as a player and hopes to go to nationals in the future as a coach! She played four years as an outside hitter at Independence High School and lettered three times in high school. She went on to play outside hitter all four years at Marietta College and was able to letter four times. While at Marietta College she was able to get over 1200 digs and over 800 kills. She is a recent graduate from Marietta with a bachelors degree in Health Science and now works at University Hospitals doing clinical research. She enjoys playing sand volleyball and indoor in her spare time!
Allisa began coaching for AVC in 2018 but has been coaching club volleyball for three years. Alissa played all through high school. She helped lead her team to state in the final 4 her senior year and worked really hard to play for Elevation’s national 18-2 team for JO season. She went on to play for Lakeland Community College on an athletic scholarship. “I absolutely love coaching, since I am no longer playing on a team of my own. Coaching has taught me so much and shown me a completely different side of volleyball. I am really looking forward to this season with AVC!”
Kerri comes to AVC for the 2019 as an assistant coach. Kerri brings vast knowledge to the club as she has experience coaching girls athletics at the high school level. She also served as an administrator with Kent State Women’s Basketball where she was responsible for day to day operations.
Kerri earned her Masters of Public Health from Kent State University in 2018 and Bachelors in Exercise Science from Baldwin Wallace University in 2014. She is looking forward to coaching her first season at AVC along side her twin sister, Coach Kalli.
George has coached in the St. Rita's CYO program for 26 years primarily at the 8th grade level. He has been with AVC since its inception where he has coached most often 14 year old teams. He has also coached with a number of other JO programs over the years, such as Cannon and Renaissance. He is CAP 1 certified.
Demi began with AVC in 2017 and assited with the 18 National team. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated in 2015 with a Life Science Communications degree. She played professional volleyball in Denmark and Puerto Rico and currently is a Recruiter at JACK Cleveland Casino.
Jesus begins his coaching career with AVC for the 2019 season.
Jesus played club volleyball for Borinquen Coqui in San Juan PR and then went on to play at the collegiate level both at Concordia College in New York and then at USC. He also has experience at the professional level playing both in Puerto Rico and overseas. He was a member of both the Junior and Senior National team.
Jason Schellenberger coached at Medina High School from 1999-2011. While at Medina he coached his team to a 21-4 record in 2007 and was named both District 3 and N.O.C coach of the year. In 2010 he lead the Bees to the its first Regional appearance since 1984. This is his third year coaching club volleyball. One year at Ignite and the past two years here with AVC. He also played 3 years on Kent State Mens Club Volleyball.
Andy Welkley has been part of AVC since 2016, coaching teams at various age groups and contributing to camps and clinics. Andy has coached at the collegiate level with stints at Rochester Institute of Technology and Nazareth College where he coached several Division III All Americans. Prior to joining AVC, he coached 8th grade teams in Charleston, South Carolina. As a coach, he specializes in the fundamentals of passing and defense and teaching setters best practices around decision making and running an offense. Beyond coaching, Andy has been involved in volleyball as a referee and player, and has run a variety of adult volleyball clinics. He was the part owner and manager of Hot Shots Indoor Beach Volleyball Club in Parma, Ohio and ran leagues and tournaments there that served almost 1,000 players a week at it's peak.
Ally started with AVC in 2017. She has played volleyball for nearly 10 years, 4 of which were at AVC. She was an outside hitter and defensive specialist. She is currently a junior at Kent State University studying Psychology. She looks forward to another great season. She will bring encouragement, good sportsmanship and dedication to the girls on the court. She is IMPACT, SafeSport and Concussion certified.
